ESR Test - What Does It Show?

ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) is a laboratory test that measures how quickly a blood sample settles.

How Does It Work?

A blood sample is placed in a vertical tube and we measure how long it takes for red blood cells to sink to the bottom in 1 hour. If red blood cells settle faster than usual, this may indicate inflammation.

Why Is This Test Done?

  • Diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Monitoring the fight against infection
  • Assessment of other inflammations
  • Monitoring chronic disease status
  • Normal Results

  • Men: 0-15 mm/hour
  • Women: 0-20 mm/hour
  • Higher values may indicate inflammation, infection or other diseases.

    Frequently Asked Questions
